“There Is No Power For Change Greater Than A Community Discovering What It Cares About”
– Margaret J Wheatley.
In 10 years, 65% of the world’s middle-class population will reside in Asia. These consumers will ask more of their food supply chains, seeking highly nutritious, fresh and safe produce delivered conveniently and on demand. Today, the agri-food industry is already struggling to keep up, and current trends show that growing populations and urbanization have led to high wastage and poor quality as current supply chains are stretched and broken.
Taken as a whole, if we continue without any change, Asia will be unable to feed itself, relying on imports flowing through long supply chains from the Americas, Europe and Africa. Climate change and environmental degradation will hit Asia hardest, impacting available arable land, yields and farm output, exacerbating these production challenges.
On top of global macro trends, the Philippines faces unique challenges; fragmentation in farm sizes, urbanization and the younger generation’s unwillingness to remain in the sector have led to a lack of security when it comes to the future of farming. According to the Philippine Department of Agriculture, the average age of a farmer today is 60 years old.
This is where our mission starts. In 10 years, we want to be able to:
We want to move away from monocropping, and instead show that even with small farm lots, we can consistently raise a sustainable variety of produce and directly supply cafes and restaurants throughout the year.
We want to bring people closer to their source of food, by opening up our space for experiences tied to food production during our harvest seasons.
We want to be able to change the way the future generation thinks about agriculture and food by partnering up with schools to build onsite education programs.
We want to prove that there’s a future in agriculture and food production by working towards operating with sustainable profit margins.
Most importantly, we want to be able to impact and change the lives of local families in our community by employing local, with a preference for supporting mothers and young adults.
